Why do anxiety and depression often go hand in hand?

Alex Walker · asked Jul 1, 2026
I've noticed both seem to come together for me. Is this common, and how does it affect treatment?

When you experience both anxiety and depression, it's what's called 'comorbid'. It's super common because both share a lot of biological factors, like neurotransmitter imbalances. Plus, they feed off each other—anxiety can cause you to feel hopeless, and depression can make you worry about your future. In terms of treatment, it's important to get a professional to look at both sides of the coin. A mix of therapy and medication often works best, but the specific approach can vary. Definitely don't rely on self-diagnosis; a clinician's trained assessment is crucial here.

As someone who has dealt with both anxiety and depression, I can tell you they do often come together. It feels like a vicious cycle sometimes, where anxiety leads to depressive thoughts, and being down makes you more anxious. For me, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) really helped because it tackled both issues by changing thinking patterns. Meds were also part of my treatment. It's important to find a therapist or psychiatrist willing to look at both conditions and not just try to treat them separately.
