Which is better for disease research: single-cell or spatial genomics?

I'm curious about how these methods compare and if one is more useful than the other in understanding diseases.

In my experience, both single-cell and spatial genomics have their own advantages, depending on the aspect of disease research you're focusing on. Single-cell genomics is great for understanding the function of individual cells. It gives you a detailed picture of cellular diversity and gene expression. However, it does lose the context of where these cells are located within the tissue. On the other hand, spatial genomics maintains the tissue architecture, which is essential when the disease process is influenced by cellular neighborhoods. If you're studying a condition where cell location matters, like cancer, this can be incredibly important. Often, using both methods together can provide the most comprehensive insights.

I worked in a lab where we used both methods, and honestly, they complement each other pretty well. Single-cell genomics was super helpful when we were trying to pinpoint which cells were driving the disease process. But when it came to understanding how these cells interacted with their environment, spatial genomics gave us a clearer picture. It really depends on what questions you’re asking in your research. If you’re after detailed cell behavior, go single-cell. If you need to see how cells are positioned and interact, spatial’s the way to go. Combining them was where we got the most interesting insights.
